The German higher education system is divided into:
- Foundation Programmes (Studienkolleg) for eligible international students.
- Bachelor’s Degrees, generally completed in three to four years.
- Master’s Degrees, typically completed in one to two years.
- Postgraduate Diploma and Certificate Programmes.
- Doctoral (PhD) Programmes, usually requiring three to five years of research.
- Professional and Applied Sciences Programmes offered by Universities of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschulen).
Academic Year
Most universities in Germany offer two major intakes each year.
The Winter Intake, beginning in September or October, is the primary admission period and offers the widest range of programmes. The Summer Intake generally starts in March or April, with selected universities offering additional courses during this period.
Application deadlines vary depending on the institution and programme, so students should begin preparing their applications well in advance.

Step 5: Apply for a student visa
