SC408 COVID19 Visa & Student Work Rights: Tourism & Hospitality Added to Critical Work Sectors

Due to the exceptional circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Home Affairs has announced that student visa (subclass 500) holders working in the ‘Tourism and Hospitality’ sectors are temporarily no longer restricted to 20 hours per week (or 40 hours per fortnight) under the ‘Temporary relaxation of working hours for student visa holders.
In Australia, international students can now work full-time hours without violating Condition 8105.
This amendment was made by the Australian government to help the tourism and hospitality businesses, which have been struck particularly hard by the pandemic.
The Department has not specified when this temporary waiver would cease, however, we encourage that student visa holders get updates on a regular basis to verify that they are still in compliance with their visa criteria.

For the tourism and hospitality industries, a temporary activity (subclass 408) ‘COVID19 Visa’ is available.

Temporary visa holders working in, or intending to work in, the tourism and hospitality sector will be able to apply for the SC408 ‘VODI-19′ Visa up to 90 days before their existing visa expires, and will be able to stay in Australia for up to 12 months from the time their SC408 visa is granted, in addition to the temporary relaxation of work limitations for student visa holders.
