Student Visa Updates: August 2021

The COVID-19 increase in Australia is jeopardising efforts for student return – After the state government launched a trial plan for limited-phased international student return in June, NSW has put on hold its proposal to allow international students back into the country. Before the country can consider reopening its border, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has stated that 80 percent of its adult population must be vaccinated. According to the Grattan Institute, an Australian public policy research tank, this may only be doable by the end of the year.
Australia’s severe border policy is endangering its reputation among Indian students, according to the high commissioner – As of the beginning of July, approximately 158,000 student visa holders were still outside of Australia. That number included 17,008 Indian students, second only to China (88,769) in terms of student visa holders now residing outside of Australia.
International students can now work in Australian supermarkets for more than 40 hours – This is to assist businesses in remaining open and supermarkets in meeting the strong demand for key commodities. For the duration of their respective lockdown periods, this interim measure will apply to all supermarkets and associated distribution facilities in New South Wales and Victoria.
COVID-19 vaccine is available free of cost for international students – The COVID-19 vaccine is available to everyone in Australia on a voluntary basis and is free of charge. If you get your vaccination at Commonwealth vaccine clinics or state or territory vaccine clinics, you don’t require a Medicare card.
International students working in tourism and hospitality receive assistance – The Australian government has increased support for onshore international students working in the tourism and hospitality industries by easing fortnightly work restrictions during study periods. A 40-hour fortnightly limit that had been in place during study times has been lifted as a result of the adjustments.
